The building we know today as Uppertown Social Centre started life in 1881. It was built as a Church of England school and was known  as Ashover Upperend Endowed School, and eventually closed in 1948.

In 1954 the two Misses Bassett of Ashover bought the property and put it into "trust" for the benefit of the community of Uppertown and surrounding areas.
In 1971 a proper committee was formed and the name of Uppertown Social Centre was established.

The Centre

In 1977 a new set of five trustee's were identified.

In the early 1960's various alterations and extensions had been carried out.

In April 1994 disaster struck, and the building was gutted with fire. The building was restored to its current state through hard work from the committee members, local tradesmen, and the community as a whole, and was re-opened in April 1996.
